Our story
Located in the heart of Hikone, Shiga, Uomaru is a seafood izakaya where fresh fish and carefully selected sake meet the craft of robatayaki grilling.
Sashimi finished by skilled hands from fish delivered straight from the port, bonito from Kochi, and Omi beef from Shiga — grilled dynamically right before you over straw and charcoal.
A calm Japanese space with lively counter seats and relaxing private rooms — for dates, family dinners, and company banquets alike.
Commitment
In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.
Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.
We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.
Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.
Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.
A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

How to enjoy Robata
How to enjoy straw-grilling and robata
Across 90 seats there are counter seats, round tables, three table private rooms for six each, and two tatami private rooms for up to 30. For a close view of the straw flames, take the counter.
Begin at the surface, wrapped in the fragrance of straw. The first plain mouthful tells you what the bonito and the Omi beef taste like on their own.
Partway through, bring in condiments, rock salt and citrus. On the Shiga Mankitsu course, ten dishes at 6,050 yen, the meal runs on to Kurao pork and Omi duck junjun.
Hikone Castle, Genkyuen and Yumekyobashi Castle Road are a two minute walk back from JR Hikone Station. Our staff suggest the Shiga sake that suits your sashimi or straw-grilled plate.

We are dedicated to providing heartfelt hospitality to help you create an unforgettable day. Nestled in the historic townscape of Hikone, our restaurant awaits you with a variety of dishes that fuse fresh seafood with the rich bounties of Shiga. For special occasions like business entertainment and anniversaries, the quality of the food is paramount, as are the atmosphere, service, and a private setting. We have meticulously attended to every detail to ensure our guests are satisfied on all fronts. Please enjoy a heartwarming time with our delicious cuisine.
Where is a good place for business entertainment in Hikone?
It's our anniversary, so I want to celebrate somewhere special and different, but I can't find a good restaurant.
Many people likely share these concerns. At a typical Hikone izakaya, it can be too lively for a quiet conversation, or the menu might be too standard, lacking a sense of occasion. Especially for business entertainment or celebrating a life milestone, the choice of restaurant can make or break the day.
For example, are any of the following on your mind?
The Difficulty of Choosing a Restaurant: While Hikone has many eateries, few offer the high-quality, private spaces suitable for formal entertainment or anniversaries. When hosting important guests, you don't want to compromise on the restaurant's atmosphere or the quality of its cuisine.
A Commitment to Cuisine: You want to enjoy fresh Hikone seafood, savor pairings with local Shiga sake, or perhaps indulge in local luxuries like Omi beef. Finding a restaurant that can cater to these specific desires can be a challenge.
Ensuring Privacy: A private room izakaya in Hikone is ideal for enjoying deep conversations without worrying about your surroundings. The availability of a private room is a major factor when choosing a venue, especially for crucial business discussions or private celebrations like a marriage proposal.
Rest assured, our restaurant has taken great care to resolve these concerns and stage your special day in the best way possible. Here, we will introduce our unique features and explain how they can enhance your business dinner or anniversary celebration.
Our greatest appeal is, without a doubt, the freshness and high quality of our ingredients. The seafood, sourced fresh every morning, is served to you in its most delicious state. Our skilled chefs masterfully prepare each dish to bring out the natural umami of the ingredients. We welcome you with a rich lineup worthy of the term Hikone seafood, including vibrant sashimi platters and seasonal grilled and simmered fish.
In addition to seafood, we also offer Omi beef, nurtured by the rich climate of Shiga. Its melt-in-your-mouth texture and elegant, savory fat make it a luxurious dish perfect for a special day. The ability to enjoy the bounties of both the sea and the mountains is a unique pleasure offered at our restaurant. Our Hikone banquet courses feature well-balanced plans that combine these lavish ingredients, so please consider them.
An essential element for an important gathering is a space where you can relax without being disturbed. To respect our guests' privacy, we offer a number of elegant private tatami rooms in Hikone. We have private rooms of various sizes to accommodate a wide range of occasions, from small business dinners and family anniversaries to large gatherings like Hikone school reunions.
The space, created by soft lighting and traditional Japanese decor, has the ambiance of a fine ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurant). You can focus on your important conversations without being bothered by noise from adjacent tables. While functioning as a private room izakaya in Hikone, our relaxing tatami seating ensures comfort even during extended stays. We will recommend the best room for your needs, so please feel free to consult with us when you book. Furthermore, as a Hikone izakaya with separate smoking areas, we provide a comfortable environment for both smokers and non-smokers.
Another of our specialties is the straw-grilled bonito direct from Kochi, whose savory aroma will whet your appetite. Fresh bonito, shipped directly from Kochi, is boldly seared over straw by our skilled chefs right before your eyes. By searing the surface in an instant, the umami of the bonito is sealed in, and it takes on the rich aroma of the straw. Crispy and fragrant on the outside and tender on the inside, this straw-grilled bonito is a masterpiece you can only taste here.
We also have an extensive drink menu to complement not only the straw-grilled bonito but all our seafood from Hikone and delicacies from the Omi region. We place a special emphasis on local Shiga sake, born from the prefecture's rich water and rice. The sake, carefully brewed by local Shiga breweries, pairs exceptionally well with local ingredients. We can suggest various brands to match your meal, from crisp dry sakes to mellow sweet ones. Our staff will help you choose the perfect bottle to match your preferences and your dishes, so even those new to sake can feel at ease.
Our restaurant is conveniently located near the station, making it perfect for gatherings near Hikone Station. As an izakaya in Asahicho, just a few minutes' walk from the JR Hikone Station East Exit, our prime location is highly attractive for guests coming from afar or those who prefer not to drive. It is easy to find as a meeting spot and ideal for after-work visits, reducing the burden on the event organizer.
We also accept various credit cards and electronic money for smart and seamless payment. We strive to provide meticulous service so that you can focus on your meal and conversation with peace of mind. It is our pleasure to support your important time in the best way possible.
To create the best memories of your business dinner or anniversary in Hikone, please refer to the following steps before your visit.
Envision the Scene and Number of Guests: Is it for business or an anniversary? How many people will attend? For business use, it's helpful to know your clients' preferences and any allergies. For an anniversary, know the guest of honor's favorites. For example, details like, For a party of three with Mr. A, an important client who loves Japanese sake, so we'd like more local sake options and grilled dishes as he dislikes raw food, will help us serve you better.
Consider a Course Meal and All-You-Can-Drink Option: Our Hikone banquet courses are available at various price points and with different contents. You can choose from a seafood-focused course, a luxurious course featuring Omi beef, or a course highlighting our straw-grilled bonito direct from Kochi, depending on your budget and purpose. Combining a course with an all-you-can-drink plan simplifies the bill and gives the organizer peace of mind. For example, you can plan with specifics like, The 5,000 yen seafood course with a two-hour all-you-can-drink plan.
Check for Private Room Availability and Type: If you value a private space, our establishment as a private room izakaya in Hikone is the perfect choice. If you would like one of our private tatami rooms in Hikone, please mention it when you book. If you have a preference for a certain type, such as a horigotatsu (sunken kotatsu) or table seating, please consult with our staff, and we will guide you to the most suitable room. A quiet private room is especially essential when used as an izakaya for business entertainment in Hikone.
Communicate Allergies and Dietary Restrictions: If you or any of your guests have allergies or dietary restrictions, please be sure to inform our staff when you book or upon arrival. We will accommodate you with alternative ingredients whenever possible. Providing specific information, such as dislikes fish roe or has a shellfish allergy, will help ensure a safe and enjoyable meal.
Discuss Surprise Plans (for Anniversaries): For anniversaries, we are happy to consult with you about surprise arrangements, such as preparing a cake, bringing in a bouquet, or creating a message plate. We will do our best to help you surprise and delight the guest of honor. Please do not hesitate to ask, for example, I'd like a birthday cake to be served after the meal, or I'd like to drop off a bouquet in advance.
Make a Reservation: Once everything is decided, please make a reservation by phone or through our website. We tend to be busy, especially on weekends, holidays, and event days, so we recommend booking early. As we are also popular for gatherings near Hikone Station, securing your seats in advance is advised.
We are fully committed to meeting our customers' desires to stage their important business dinners and anniversaries in Hikone in the most magnificent way. Please enjoy our exquisite cuisine, including fresh Hikone seafood, the rich bounties of Shiga, and our straw-grilled bonito direct from Kochi, to your heart's content in the relaxing atmosphere of our private room izakaya in Hikone.
