Our story
Located in the heart of Hikone, Shiga, Uomaru is a seafood izakaya where fresh fish and carefully selected sake meet the craft of robatayaki grilling.
Sashimi finished by skilled hands from fish delivered straight from the port, bonito from Kochi, and Omi beef from Shiga — grilled dynamically right before you over straw and charcoal.
A calm Japanese space with lively counter seats and relaxing private rooms — for dates, family dinners, and company banquets alike.
Commitment
In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.
Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.
We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.
Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.
Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.
A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

How to enjoy straw-grilling and robata
Across 90 seats there are counter seats, round tables, three table private rooms for six each, and two tatami private rooms for up to 30. For a close view of the straw flames, take the counter.
Begin at the surface, wrapped in the fragrance of straw. The first plain mouthful tells you what the bonito and the Omi beef taste like on their own.
Partway through, bring in condiments, rock salt and citrus. On the Shiga Mankitsu course, ten dishes at 6,050 yen, the meal runs on to Kurao pork and Omi duck junjun.
Hikone Castle, Genkyuen and Yumekyobashi Castle Road are a two minute walk back from JR Hikone Station. Our staff suggest the Shiga sake that suits your sashimi or straw-grilled plate.

We have no car park of our own; please use a nearby coin park.
The Shiga Full-Experience Course — ten dishes, 6,050 yen including tax — runs from Kurao pork shabu-shabu salad and salt-grilled Omi shrimp to fried simmered burdock and Omi duck jun-jun. From the Koto area of Shiga, including Maibara, it is a single train ride to Hikone Station and about 2 minutes on foot. Inside, smoking is separated: the first floor is non-smoking and the second floor allows smoking (depending on availability we cannot always seat you upstairs).

At our restaurant, we offer Hikone Banquet Courses that not only satisfy your hunger but also stimulate all five senses and leave a lasting impression. We warmly welcome and cater to various occasions, such as class reunions, farewell and welcome parties, or gatherings with cherished individuals. If you're pondering over Hikone banquet course choices, we invite you to explore our recommendations.
It’s hard to find a course that satisfies all participants, I’m concerned about the balance between the menu content and the budget, How do you handle allergies or disliked ingredients? – Many people likely have such concerns when selecting a banquet course in Hikone. At our restaurant, we genuinely listen to these voices and respond carefully to each one, preparing banquet courses that everyone can truly enjoy.
Our Hikone Banquet Courses are dedicated to generously using seasonal ingredients that change with each season, committing to offer the unique deliciousness of that specific time of year. For example, the harmony woven by carefully selected ingredients such as the blessings from Lake Biwa, fresh local vegetables, and premium seafood (Hikone Seafood) sourced from across the country will surely delight your palate. While upholding Japanese culinary traditions, we sometimes incorporate Western elements to devise menus that can be enjoyed by a wide range of generations. We offer a balanced selection of both meat and fish dishes, with items thoughtfully chosen for their compatibility with alcoholic beverages.
Beyond the deliciousness of our cuisine, we also focus on creating an atmosphere that enhances your banquet. Our private rooms, offering a tranquil setting for relaxed conversation, are perfect for spending special time with important people, whether for Hikone class reunions, business dinners, or anniversaries. We provide various types of private rooms to accommodate different group sizes, allowing you to enjoy a private space without reservations. Upon hearing wine pairing, some might feel it’s a bit intimidating. However, it is by no means difficult; it’s a wonderful experience that enhances the deliciousness of dishes many times over and brings new discoveries. Our restaurant actively incorporates this wine pairing into our Hikone Banquet Courses, aiming to deliver surprise and delight to all our guests.
Wine pairing is the concept where the combination of food and wine mutually enhances each other's flavors. For example, pairing light white fish sashimi with a refreshing dry white wine featuring citrus aromas, such as Koshu, accentuates the umami of the fish, while the wine's acidity refreshes the palate. For rich meat dishes, choosing a red wine with firm tannins allows the wine to cut through the meat’s richness, leaving the mouth feeling clean. In this way, by serving the optimal wine with each dish, you can experience depths and dimensions of flavor you never knew existed.
Please rest assured if you have concerns like There are too many types of wine; I don’t know which to choose, or I don’t know which wine suits my taste. Some of our staff hold sommelier qualifications and will carefully guide you through selecting wines that match each dish, even sharing the stories behind the wines. We promise meticulous support, proposing the optimal pairing according to your preferences and budget, so that even wine beginners can enjoy themselves to their heart's content. As a Hikone Izakaya, we aim to be an approachable place where everyone can discover the charm of wine.
To give you a clearer picture, we will introduce a few examples from our Hikone Banquet Courses where wine pairing particularly shines. While the menu varies seasonally, our fundamental philosophy remains consistent.
Shiga Prefecture is a lake region, and also benefits from the distribution of fresh seafood. Especially in courses featuring the most delicious seasonal Hikone Seafood, we deeply pursue wine pairings that complement and enhance their delicate flavors without overpowering them.
Vegetables grown in Shiga's fertile land and carefully raised meats are also indispensable to our Hikone Banquet Courses. By pairing them with the optimal wine, we bring out the maximum natural deliciousness of the ingredients.
While wine pairing is wonderful, for large gatherings like Hikone class reunions or drinking parties near Hikone Station, free-flow drinks, allowing everyone to enjoy their favorite beverages at their own pace, are also popular. Our restaurant offers a wide selection of sake, shochu, and beer, as well as several types of red and white wines. We have a comprehensive drink menu to ensure everyone can enjoy lively conversation with their preferred drink in hand.
