Commitment

1

The size of the bonito

In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.

2

Raw bonito from Kochi

Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.

3

Straw from Shiga

We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.

4

The grilling

Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.

5

The thickness of the cut

Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.

6

Our chosen salt

A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

Service

01

Robata & Warayaki

Bonito from Kochi and Omi beef from Shiga, grilled over straw right before you. Seasonal fish and vegetables draw out their fullest flavor over charcoal.

02

Sake & Local Brews

A generous selection of sake chosen from across Japan, including local Shiga brews — from dry to sweet. Our staff suggest the one glass that suits your dish, so you can enjoy sake tasting in Hikone.

03

Seafood & Sashimi

Fresh fish shipped straight from the port, finished into sashimi by skilled hands. Enjoy the seafood of Hikone in seasonal plates such as our five-kind sashimi platter.

04

Omi Beef & Omi Chicken

Shiga's specialty Omi beef, straw-grilled or miso-marinated, and overnight-dried Omi chicken. Enjoy Shiga's premium ingredients dynamically over charcoal in Hikone.

05

Private Rooms & Banquets

Relaxing private rooms, banquet courses with free-flow drinks, and full-venue bookings on request. Steps from Hikone Station — ideal for company parties and gatherings.

How to enjoy Robata

Robata Story

01

Choose your seat: counter or round table

Across 90 seats there are counter seats, round tables, three table private rooms for six each, and two tatami private rooms for up to 30. For a close view of the straw flames, take the counter.

02

Straight off the fire, taste it plain

Begin at the surface, wrapped in the fragrance of straw. The first plain mouthful tells you what the bonito and the Omi beef taste like on their own.

03

Move through the course with salt and citrus

Partway through, bring in condiments, rock salt and citrus. On the Shiga Mankitsu course, ten dishes at 6,050 yen, the meal runs on to Kurao pork and Omi duck junjun.

04

A cup after walking Hikone Castle

Hikone Castle, Genkyuen and Yumekyobashi Castle Road are a two minute walk back from JR Hikone Station. Our staff suggest the Shiga sake that suits your sashimi or straw-grilled plate.

  • I want high-quality food, but I'm also concerned about the budget.
  • I absolutely want to avoid a bad experience, especially for important business entertainment in Hikone or a Hikone reunion.
  • I need a place that can accommodate a large group for a banquet course in Hikone and values privacy.
  • I'm looking for a restaurant with a menu that caters to various tastes and offers a wide selection of drinks.
  • I'm worried about whether they can accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions.

When choosing an izakaya, everyone hopes for an experience that exceeds their expectations. However, in today's world of information overload, finding a truly reliable restaurant is not easy. This choice becomes even more critical when planning a special evening in Hikone.

We deeply understand these concerns. That's why, through our Chef's Recommended Course, we pay meticulous attention to every detail—from the food and ambiance to the service—to provide each customer with the best possible experience. We promise our course meals will not just fill your stomach but also create lasting culinary memories.

The Secrets Behind Our Chef's Exquisite Course: A Feast for the Senses

Our Chef's Recommended Course was designed to solve the customer's dilemma of Where can I go without being disappointed? and deliver ultimate satisfaction for any occasion. Here, we reveal its secrets based on three core pillars.

1. Exquisite Seafood and Omi Beef: The Freshest Ingredients Direct from the Fishing Port and Masterful Craftsmanship

The foundation of our course meals is, above all, freshness and quality. The fresh seafood in Hikone, sourced daily directly from our partner fishing ports, arrives at your table in its prime condition. Our specialty, the straw-seared bonito shipped directly from Kochi, is rapidly grilled over a straw flame, creating a fragrant exterior and a moist, tender interior that brings out its exquisite flavor. This dish is so popular that it's ordered by about 80% of our customers.

  1. Carefully Selected Seasonal Seafood: We serve the ocean's bounty, which changes with the seasons, prepared in the optimal way—whether as sashimi, grilled, or simmered. For instance, we select the best seafood of the season, such as firm snow crab from the Sea of Japan in winter or conger eel from the Seto Inland Sea in summer.
  2. Straw-Seared Bonito Direct from Kochi: The harmony of the straw aroma that fills your mouth the moment you take a bite and the rich flavor of the bonito itself creates an unforgettable dish. About 95% of customers who order it praise its wonderful aroma and deep flavor.
  3. Omi Beef, Shiga's Prized Brand: In addition to seafood, Omi beef, raised in Shiga's rich natural environment, is another star of our courses. Its melt-in-your-mouth texture and the elegant flavor of its fat significantly enhance the overall satisfaction of the meal. We propose the most delicious ways to enjoy Omi beef, such as steak, seared, or shabu-shabu.

2. A Symphony of Flavors: Over 25 Types of Sake and Local Shiga Sake to Complement Your Meal

Delicious food requires delicious drinks. For our courses, we have curated a selection of fine liquors so you can enjoy the perfect pairing with your meal.

  1. Extensive Sake Lineup: We always have over 25 varieties of sake carefully selected from all over Japan. From dry to sweet, and from rich to light, we can recommend the perfect one to match your preference and your dish. At our regular sake tasting events, about 70% of customers discover a new favorite.
  2. Savoring Local Shiga Sake: We also feature a large selection of famous sake from our home, Shiga. From the renowned brand known from the Biwako Shuko no Uta song to limited-edition brews crafted with care by local brewmasters, experience the depth of local Shiga sake. We often hear from local patrons that there's sake here you can't drink anywhere else.
  3. Pairings Selected by a Sommelier: In addition to sake, we offer a rich selection of wine, shochu, and fruit liqueurs. Our knowledgeable staff can suggest the best drink pairings for each course dish, further enriching your dining experience.
