Commitment

1

The size of the bonito

In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.

2

Raw bonito from Kochi

Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.

3

Straw from Shiga

We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.

4

The grilling

Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.

5

The thickness of the cut

Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.

6

Our chosen salt

A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

Service

How to enjoy Robata

Robata Story

01

Choose your seat: counter or round table

Across 90 seats there are counter seats, round tables, three table private rooms for six each, and two tatami private rooms for up to 30. For a close view of the straw flames, take the counter.

02

Straight off the fire, taste it plain

Begin at the surface, wrapped in the fragrance of straw. The first plain mouthful tells you what the bonito and the Omi beef taste like on their own.

03

Move through the course with salt and citrus

Partway through, bring in condiments, rock salt and citrus. On the Shiga Mankitsu course, ten dishes at 6,050 yen, the meal runs on to Kurao pork and Omi duck junjun.

04

A cup after walking Hikone Castle

Hikone Castle, Genkyuen and Yumekyobashi Castle Road are a two minute walk back from JR Hikone Station. Our staff suggest the Shiga sake that suits your sashimi or straw-grilled plate.

Peace of Mind in Hikone: A Smoke-Free Izakaya with Allergy Support and a Comfortable Space

Choosing an izakaya in Hikone is an important part of planning a fun time. In recent years, however, finding the right place has become a challenge, especially for those sensitive to cigarette smoke or with specific food allergies. Perhaps you've had experiences like, I couldn't enjoy the conversation because the smoke was bothering me, or I struggled to choose from the menu because of my allergies.

We understand that some customers looking for an izakaya in Hikone may have concerns such as, Where can I find a place with a proper non-smoking policy? or Is there anywhere I can dine safely with my allergies? Our restaurant is dedicated to addressing these concerns by implementing thorough smoke-free measures and providing detailed, attentive allergy support.

We would like to introduce you to the comfortable environment we offer as a smoke-free izakaya in Hikone and our allergy-friendly policies that allow you to savor Hikone's seafood and our specialty straw-grilled bonito from Kochi to your heart's content. Please read on to see how we strive to ensure that every single guest can fully enjoy their evening in Hikone.

Don't Let Your Hikone Get-Together Be Ruined: Concerns About Smoke and Allergies

Whether it's a gathering with colleagues, a long-awaited reunion with friends, or an anniversary with a loved one, time spent at an izakaya is special. However, two major concerns that can spoil this precious time are cigarette smoke and food allergies.

  • For those who dislike cigarette smoke, even the most delicious food and engaging conversation can be ruined. With a growing health consciousness in recent years, the demand for completely non-smoking or strictly separated smoking areas has increased. For those seeking a pleasant get-together in Hikone, a smoke-free environment is a critical factor in their choice.
  • For individuals with food allergies, anxiety over menu selection is a constant companion. The risk of accidentally ingesting an allergen can be life-threatening. Therefore, when choosing a restaurant, understanding and responsiveness to allergies are highly valued. Customers are looking for more than just allergy labels; they seek meticulous service, such as clear explanations and suggestions for alternative dishes.

Our restaurant is sincerely committed to alleviating these concerns so you can truly enjoy your izakaya experience in Hikone. We do everything in our power to ensure our guests can relax and enjoy their time, whether it's for a get-together near Hikone Station or a meal at our Asahi-cho izakaya.

Our Thorough Commitment as a Smoke-Free Izakaya in Hikone

Here is how we, as a smoke-free izakaya in Hikone, provide a comfortable space for our customers. We believe our mission is to create an environment where you can focus on delicious food and enjoyable conversation without worrying about cigarette smoke.

Commitment to 100% Non-Smoking Seating and a Designated Smoking Area

To ensure all our guests can enjoy their meal in a comfortable setting, our entire restaurant is non-smoking. This allows families with children, expectant mothers, and non-smokers to focus on Hikone's delicious cuisine and conversation without being bothered by smoke. There is no need to worry about the smell of smoke spoiling the aroma of your food or clinging to your clothes.

  • We have installed a state-of-the-art, high-performance ventilation system to maintain clean air at all times. This system constantly circulates fresh air, ensuring a pleasant atmosphere.
  • For our smoking customers, we have set up a dedicated smoking area outside the restaurant. This space is separate from the main dining area and is designed to prevent smoke from entering the interior. We strive to create a space where both smokers and non-smokers can be considerate of one another.
  • All our employees are trained to politely guide guests to the smoking area and request their cooperation with our non-smoking policy. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain a pleasant environment for everyone.

A Secure Private Room Izakaya in Hikone Experience

We also offer private rooms for guests who wish to relax even more. These rooms can be used for various occasions, from small gatherings to larger group parties. They are particularly popular with guests with children and those who want to enjoy conversation without worrying about their surroundings.

  • Each private room is self-contained, ensuring a private space. This allows you to enjoy your time with your companions without being disturbed by other guests.
  • Our 100% non-smoking policy applies to the private rooms as well. You can enjoy Hikone's seafood and our straw-grilled bonito from Kochi in a clean and comfortable space.
  • Private rooms are also beneficial for guests who require allergy support, as they allow for more detailed explanations and careful service when dishes are served.

As a smoke-free izakaya in Hikone, we are constantly working to provide a space where every customer can safely and fully enjoy the flavors of Hikone.

Our Thorough Commitment to Allergy Support: A Safe Dining Experience in Hikone

We have implemented a wide range of allergy-friendly measures to ensure that guests with food allergies can safely enjoy our dishes, including our Hikone seafood and straw-grilled bonito from Kochi. Here are the specific steps we take to protect our customers' food safety.

The Importance of Pre-consultation with Customers

We believe the first step in allergy support is gathering accurate information from our customers. We will carefully inquire about your allergy information when you make a reservation or upon your arrival.

  • When Booking: We ask that you inform us of any allergies and their details when booking by phone or in the notes section of our online reservation form. This allows us to prepare in advance of your visit.
  • Detailed Questions: We will ask specific questions, such as which ingredients you are allergic to, whether even trace amounts can cause a reaction, the severity of your symptoms, and whether it is safe to use the same cooking utensils or oil. This allows us to determine the best way to accommodate your needs.
  • Final Confirmation on Arrival: When you arrive, our staff will confirm your allergy information once more. This ensures there are no discrepancies from your booking and allows us to account for your current condition, leading to a safer dining experience.

Consideration in Ingredient Selection and Cooking Processes

Based on the allergy information you provide, we take the utmost care from ingredient selection through the entire cooking process.

  • Strict Ingredient Management and Information Sharing: We thoroughly manage allergen information for all ingredients used in our restaurant. We work closely with our suppliers to stay informed about allergens in raw materials. An allergy support manual is maintained and shared among all kitchen staff to ensure everyone has the latest information.
  • Management of Cooking Utensils and Spaces: Whenever possible, we use dedicated utensils and cooking areas free of specific allergens to prevent cross-contamination. Utensils are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, and we have established protocols to prevent secondary contamination. For example, for a guest with an egg allergy, a frying pan used for eggs will always be cleaned and sanitized before being used for their dish.
  • Proposing Alternative Ingredients and Cooking Methods: Depending on your allergy, we may suggest modifying a menu item, using alternative ingredients, or changing the cooking method. For instance, we can prepare a dish without soy sauce for someone with a wheat allergy or use dairy-free seasonings for a guest with a dairy allergy.

Menu Labeling and Staff Training

We are also focused on providing clear information and training our staff so that you can choose from the menu with confidence and consult with us without hesitation.

  • Allergy Labeling on Menus: We strive to indicate the seven major allergens (egg, milk, wheat, buckwheat, peanut, shrimp, crab) on our menus. For other allergens, our staff will be happy to provide detailed information upon request.
  • Allergy Training for All Staff: Not only our kitchen staff but all employees, including servers, are trained in basic allergy knowledge and our support protocols. We conduct regular training sessions to ensure they can answer customer questions accurately. A system is in place for them to immediately consult a manager if they are unsure about anything.
  • Emergency Response Manual: We have prepared an emergency response manual for the unlikely event of an allergic reaction and conduct drills to ensure a swift and appropriate response. Our top priority is customer safety, and we are prepared to act calmly and effectively in an emergency.

Through these efforts, we are fully committed to ensuring that guests enjoying a get-together near Hikone Station or a meal at our Asahi-cho izakaya can savor the delicious food of Hikone without worrying about allergies. Please do not hesitate to ask us about anything, no matter how small.

The Charm of Our Izakaya: Balancing the Flavors of Hikone with Peace of Mind

As a smoke-free izakaya in Hikone, while we prioritize providing a safe space and thorough allergy support, we also invite you to fully enjoy the unique culinary delights of the region. Our Hikone seafood and straw-grilled bonito from Kochi are two of our proud specialties that have been praised by many customers.

Straw-Grilled Bonito from Kochi: A Signature Dish That Can Be Made Allergy-Friendly

Our signature dish, the straw-grilled bonito from Kochi, captivates guests with its aromatic flavor and rich taste. This dish is also one that guests with allergies can enjoy with relative peace of mind.

  • Simple Cooking Method: Straw-grilling is a simple technique where fresh bonito is seared at a high temperature over a short time. We use minimal extra seasonings or additives, which reduces the risk of allergen contamination.
  • Adjustable Seasoning: While it is typically seasoned with salt or ponzu sauce, we can flexibly adjust the seasoning to suit your allergies or preferences, such as preparing it without soy sauce or changing the type of dashi. Please feel free to discuss this with us when you book or order.
  • Aromatic and Appetizing: We use fresh bonito shipped directly from Kochi and grill it instantly, allowing the rich aroma of the straw to enhance the bonito's umami. The surface is fragrant and seared, while the inside is tender, allowing you to fully enjoy the taste of Kochi right here in Hikone.

Hikone Seafood: Enjoying Fresh Catches Safely

Another major appeal of our restaurant is the opportunity to savor Hikone seafood in a city blessed by Lake Biwa. We take the utmost care to ensure you can enjoy fresh seafood safely.

  • Carefully Selected Seasonal Fish: We select the freshest seasonal seafood daily from our suppliers. We are meticulous in our choices to deliver the best of the season's bounty to our customers.
  • Clear Allergen Information: For our various seafood dishes, including sashimi platters, grilled fish, and simmered fish, we clearly provide information not only on the types of fish used but also on allergens contained in soy sauce, dashi, and condiments.
  • Individualized Preparation: For guests with a shellfish allergy, for example, we take measures to prevent cross-contamination by using separate utensils and cutting boards. We can also accommodate requests to cook items for those who are concerned about eating raw fish.

Private Room Izakaya in Hikone: A Special Time in Your Own Space

As a private room izakaya in Hikone, another of our strengths is offering a private space just for you. A private room provides an even more secure environment for guests who require allergy support.

  • Attentive Service: The staff member assigned to your private room will be aware of your allergies in advance and can provide more personalized service, such as reconfirming details when serving your dishes.
  • Consult in Privacy: In a private room, you can discuss your allergies in detail without worrying about being overheard. Our staff can also take the time to carefully consider how to best accommodate your specific needs.

For those looking for a get-together near Hikone Station, our convenient location is another advantage. We offer a special izakaya experience where you can enjoy Hikone seafood, including our straw-grilled bonito from Kochi, in a comfortable, smoke-free environment without allergy concerns.

Practical Steps Before Your Visit: For a Worry-Free Get-Together

To help you have a safe and enjoyable time at our smoke-free izakaya in Hikone, here are the steps we recommend you take before your visit and what we can do to help.

1. Please Provide Specific Allergy Information When Booking

The most important step is to provide us with specific information about your allergies when you make a reservation. This allows us to prepare in advance and ensure a smooth experience.

  • For Phone Reservations: Please clearly inform our staff that you have a food allergy, specify the allergen(s) (e.g., eggs, dairy, wheat, shrimp), the severity of your symptoms (e.g., severe reaction to trace amounts, mild symptoms), and any preferences for alternative ingredients.
  • For Online Reservations: Please enter the detailed allergy information in the notes or special requests section of the reservation form. The more specific you are, the better we can prepare.

By providing this information, we can check cooking procedures in the kitchen, consider alternative menu options, or inform you of any dishes we cannot serve, allowing us to make the best possible arrangements.

2. Please Cooperate with Our Final Confirmation Upon Arrival

When you arrive, our staff will confirm the allergy information provided at the time of your booking. We ask for your cooperation in this final check, as your safety is our top priority.

  • Confirmation from Staff: We will ask specific questions, such as, Ms./Mr. Smith, we have your allergy information as 'X allergen,' is that correct? and How are you feeling today?
  • Menu Consultation: Our staff will go over the menu with you, explaining which dishes are free of allergens and which can be modified. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

3. Enjoy Your Meal with Peace of Mind

After these steps, we will prepare and serve your food with the utmost care. Please relax and enjoy the delicious seafood of Hikone and our straw-grilled bonito from Kochi to your heart's content.

  • Careful Service: When serving an allergy-friendly dish, our staff will reconfirm it with you. This provides an extra layer of reassurance.
  • In Case of Concern: If you feel uneasy or notice any change in your condition during your meal, please notify a staff member immediately. We will respond swiftly.

As a smoke-free izakaya in Hikone, we are dedicated to providing the best Hikone Station get-together or Asahi-cho izakaya experience through a comfortable space and meticulous allergy support. If you have any questions or requests, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.
